No fewer than thirteen passengers perish and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the country's president.

The official announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The construction of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its role in national infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid pace, surpassing predictions to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled persistent concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party demanded an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
