Are You Able to Solve It? The Forgotten Dutch Creation Which Forged the Modern World
There are many candidates for the title of “planet’s most significant innovation.” The wheel. The movable type. The steam engine.
According to a recent publication, though, that honor should go to the automated timber mill invented by Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Prior to mechanised sawing, building a modest trading ship required approximately 10 lumberjacks working for 90 days,” writes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-driven sawmills, the same quantity of processed timber might be manufactured in less than a week.”
Owing to their rapid automated cutter, that turned timber to boards using almost no human effort, the Dutch were able to construct vessels more quickly than anyone else, which unleashed a century of Netherlands maritime, financial and artistic dominance in Europe and the world.
The Original True Manufacturing Device
Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, contends Dávila, represented “humanity’s initial true industrial apparatus.” A windmill rotated a wheel. A single part transformed its rotary movement into vertical action to power the cutting blade. Another component changed the rotary motion into a lateral motion advancing the timber to the cutter. A ratchet system shifted the log ahead a measured step per cycle.
“Every component seemed modest on its own. Corneliszoon’s brilliance lay in how to integrate these parts so the machine acted within a perfectly controlled sequence, cutting with each downward motion and moving on every return motion. It was a remarkably clever application of fundamental parts.”
